The Wrong Map Has Been Running the Economy.

The problem

Every risk model, every portfolio, and every market analysis begins with a classification decision that was inherited, never designed, and never examined.

GICS, SIC, and NAICS organize economic data the way a Victorian museum organizes specimens — by surface appearance and historical convention, not by function. Two entities can look identical by industry code and be functionally unrelated, or look unrelated and be functionally identical. The result is organized confusion: data that looks ordered and structurally is not.

The coordinate system

Functional Coordinates locate any business, job, product, or resource by what it functionally does and where it sits in the order of work — a third reference frame alongside geographic and temporal coordinates. Drawing from biological systems, botanical classification, and categorical theory, Systems Economics is the formal science built on that frame, and FIS®, the Functional Information System, is its founding coordinate system.

The evidence

Royalty Pharma

Built from a $60 million start in 1996 to the world’s largest acquirer of pharmaceutical royalties — $26 billion at 2026, with partial royalty rights on seven of the top thirty drugs sold in the United States.

Cibus

The leading precision gene editing company for agriculture, applying the same pharmaceutical-grade production standards to plant biology through the Rapid Trait Development System®. Named Fast Company’s #2 Most Innovative Agriculture Company of 2024.

“The economic data that runs every risk model, every portfolio, and every market analysis is organized by a system designed before anyone understood what it was organizing. The result is organized confusion — data that looks ordered and structurally is not. For thirty years, I have been building the replacement: the first formal coordinate system for economic reality, drawn from biological systems, botany, and categorical theory, rather than inherited from convention.”
